Burner installation and maintenance: preparation before installation
The burner is the core equipment of the entire boiler and other thermal energy systems. The installation and maintenance of the burner is crucial to the safe and efficient operation of the boiler thermal energy equipment.
Before installing the burner, it is important to carefully read the burner drawing and the “Operation and Installation Manual” supplied with the burner.
The manual includes detailed instructions, burner drawings, and details showing the furnace, refractory brick dimensions and gas injection direction as well as the required installation tolerances.
Key points of burner installation
The key components of the combustion furnace system are refractory bricks and combustion flame tubes. The correct installation and maintenance of these key components are the key to achieving the burner design function. The installer must fully understand the importance and key points of installation.
1. Importance of refractory bricks
Refractory bricks provide the basis for the operation of the entire burner, including restricting the combustion air flow, providing an environment for fuel and air mixing, maintaining combustion flame stability, shaping the flame shape, and minimizing emissions.
- The size of the refractory brick neck is designed to allow a certain amount of air to enter the combustion reaction at a given pressure drop. If the neck is too small or too large, the burner will not be able to enter the required excess air.
- Mixing air and fuel-Refractory bricks have channels or areas and special structural designs to help mix air and fuel. Proper mixing is essential for good combustion.
- Maintain flame stability-Flame stability is the top priority for good burner operation. Burner refractory bricks use bosses or shoulders (blunt bodies) to provide low pressure areas to help flame stability. Refractory bricks have a certain heat storage function, providing a hot “chamber” around the flame to help stabilize the flame.
- Shape the flame-The burner refractory bricks restrict the air circulation form, cooperate with the fuel jet flow, and shape the flame into the correct shape according to the technical requirements of the tube furnace. The combustion flame can be designed as a rectangular flame or a round flame.
- Minimize emissions-Burner refractory bricks play a vital role in reducing NOx emissions from combustion.Refractory brick design provides contours or paths that allow optimal reaction between fuel gas and flue gas to reduce NOx formation
2. The importance of the combustion head
The combustion head design technology is actually the core of burner development and design.
Most of the field problems of burners are related to incorrect direction, position and fouling of the combustion head.
The main purpose of the gas injector is to inject the fuel, mix it with the combustion air and provide the proper flame morphology for the process furnace.
The drilling structure and number of gas injectors are designed to provide the required flame pattern and help maintain a stable and safe combustion reaction while achieving low NOx emissions.
Preparation before installation
1. Check the list of burners, accessories and components.
- The burner mechanical assembly and burner refractory bricks are usually shipped separately, unless there are special circumstances, such as the burner is mounted horizontally, in which case the refractory bricks are usually installed on the burner.
- The burner should be unpacked and inspected before installation to ensure that all parts match the bill of materials that came with the burner.
- If you find any missing parts or parts that appear incorrect or damaged, you should contact the burner manufacturer immediately.
- The bill of materials will list the major components of the burner, such as the burner assembly and burner refractory bricks, as well as other miscellaneous parts.
- Verify that all pre-assembled parts are as shown on the burner drawing.
2. Safety
- Place “People Inside Furnace” signs at all entrances, fuel control panels, supply valves, and fuel lines
- Always have one person at the furnace entrance to notify others that someone is inside the furnace
- When entering the furnace, open all burner air inlets and furnace chimney dampers to the fully open position
